Introduction

For humans, the world is largely experienced through our eyes and ears. For a dog, however, the nose is one of its primary ways of understanding the world.

A dog doesn't simply smell that another dog has passed by. Its extraordinary olfactory system can extract information about what was there, who was there, what they may have eaten, where they went and, to some degree, how recently they were there.

Dogs have more than 100 million sensory receptor sitesĀ in their nasal cavity, while humans have around 6 million. Some estimates for exceptional scenting breeds reach approximately 300 million receptors. (Vca)

The dog's nose is therefore not merely an organ for breathing. It is simultaneously a chemical detector, environmental scanner, communication system and survival tool.

1. The Anatomy of the Dog's Nose

The visible black, brown, liver or pink part of the nose is called the nasal planum. Behind the nostrils is a remarkably complicated internal structure.

The canine nose consists broadly of:

  • The nostrils (nares)

  • Nasal passages

  • Nasal cavity

  • Nasal turbinates

  • Olfactory epithelium

  • Mucus-producing glands

  • Sensory receptor cells

  • Nerves leading to the brain

  • The vomeronasal/Jacobson's organ

The remarkable nostrils

A dog can use its nostrils somewhat independently when investigating an odour.

This helps the brain determine the direction from which an odour is coming.

This is one reason you may see a dog moving its head from side to side while sniffing. It is effectively gathering additional information about the location of a scent source.

2. How Many Cells Are in a Dog's Nose?

This is where things become particularly interesting.

There is no single scientifically established number for "all the cells in a dog's nose."Ā The nose contains many different types of cells, including epithelial cells, gland cells, blood-vessel cells, supporting cells and sensory neurons.

What scientists commonly measure instead is the number of olfactory receptor cells/sensory receptor sites.

Depending on breed and individual dog, estimates commonly range from more than 100 million to several hundred million olfactory receptors. Bloodhounds are frequently cited at around 300 million, while some other dogs are estimated around 200–225 million. (American Kennel Club)

These figures should be regarded as breed-level estimates rather than an exact cell count for every individual dog.

And receptor number isn't the only thing that determines scent ability. The size and structure of the nasal cavity, airflow, olfactory tissue, genetics, training and the brain's ability to process odours all matter.

3. The Dog's Brain Is Built for Smell

The extraordinary nose would be far less useful without an equally extraordinary brain.

A substantial portion of the dog's nervous system is devoted to processing olfactory information. The olfactory system communicates with brain regions involved in memory, emotion and behaviour.

This helps explain why a smell can produce such a powerful reaction in a dog.

A particular scent may be associated with:

  • A person

  • Another animal

  • Food

  • Fear

  • Safety

  • Territory

  • Previous experiences

  • Sexual status

  • Disease or physiological changes

4. Why Is a Dog's Nose Wet?

The famous cold, wet dog noseĀ has a very good biological explanation.

Dogs produce mucus that helps keep the nasal surfaces moist. Moisture is useful because many odour molecules adhere more effectively to a damp surface.

Dogs also frequently lick their noses.

This isn't simply a cute habit.

When a dog licks its nose, it can:

  1. Clean away accumulated particles.

  2. Add moisture to the surface.

  3. Move scent particles into the mouth.

  4. Potentially obtain additional chemical information through taste and the vomeronasal system.

So is a wet nose healthier?

Not necessarily.

A healthy dog can occasionally have a dry nose, and a sick dog can have a wet nose.

5. Why Is Some Dogs' Noses Dry?

A dry nose can occur for completely harmless reasons.

For example:

A sleeping dog isn't licking its nose as frequently, so the surface can become dry.

Exposure to strong sunlight, heat or dry environmental conditions can dry the nose.

7. Common Dangers to a Dog's Nose

The canine nose is remarkably sophisticated, but it is also exposed directly to the environment.

Dogs with pink, pale or lightly pigmented noses can be particularly vulnerable to sun damage.

Repeated UV exposure can cause inflammation and, in susceptible animals, more serious skin disease.

Hot surfaces, particularly metal and other surfaces heated by the South African sun, can injure exposed nasal tissue.

Household chemicals, cleaning products, pesticides and other irritants can damage the nasal lining.

8. Common Diseases and Disorders of the Dog's Nose

There are many conditions affecting the canine nose.

Rhinitis

RhinitisĀ means inflammation of the nasal passages.

It can be associated with:

  • Viral infections

  • Bacterial infections

  • Fungal disease

  • Allergies

  • Irritants

  • Foreign bodies

Symptoms can include:

  • Sneezing

  • Nasal discharge

  • Noisy breathing

  • Pawing at the nose

  • Reduced sense of smell

Nasal infections

Bacterial and fungal infections can affect the nasal cavity.

Fungal disease can sometimes be particularly destructive and may cause:

Two important examples are:

  • Ulceration

Pemphigus

Can produce crusting and erosions affecting the nose and muzzle.

11. Nasal Tumours

Unfortunately, dogs can develop tumours inside the nasal cavity.

One of the more common nasal cancers in dogs is nasal adenocarcinoma. (Vca)

Potential warning signs include:

  • Persistent nasal discharge

  • Bloody discharge

  • Repeated nosebleeds

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Noisy breathing

  • Facial swelling

  • Reduced appetite

  • Weight loss

12. Why Do Dogs Sniff So Much?

To a human, a dog stopping every few metres to sniff may appear distracted.

For the dog, however, it may be equivalent to reading a newspaper.

Odours can provide information about:

  • Other dogs

  • Other animals

  • Humans

  • Food

  • Territory

  • Reproduction

  • Environmental changes

  • Potential threats

This is why allowing a dog some time to sniff during walks can provide important mental stimulation.

13. The Incredible Vomeronasal Organ

Dogs possess another fascinating scent-related structure called the vomeronasal organ, also known as Jacobson's organ.

It is associated particularly with detecting chemical signals such as pheromones.

This is one reason dogs may appear extremely interested in the scent of another dog's urine or reproductive secretions.

To us, it might smell like "dog urine."

To a dog, it can contain a wealth of biological information.

14. Do Different Dog Breeds Have Different Noses?

Dogs have been selectively bred for thousands of years for different jobs.

Consequently, breeds differ in:

  • Muzzle length

German Shepherds combine a powerful sense of smell with:

  • Intelligence

  • Trainability

  • Endurance

  • Focus

  • Versatility

Belgian Malinois

Belgian Malinois are exceptionally capable working dogs.

Their nose is combined with:

  • Very high motivation

  • Intelligence

  • Athleticism

  • Trainability

Labrador Retriever

Labradors have excellent scenting abilities and are widely used for detection work.

Their combination of a strong nose, food motivation, intelligence and friendly temperament makes them particularly useful for specialised detection roles.

Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is another excellent scenting breed.

Its extremely long ears and loose facial skin aren't merely cosmetic characteristics. Their anatomy can help keep scent close to the head while the dog works with its nose near the ground.

17. Can Dogs Smell Disease?

This is one of the most fascinating areas of canine scent research.

Dogs have been trained experimentally and operationally to detect certain biological odours associated with disease and physiological changes.

Their extraordinary olfactory abilities have led researchers to investigate detection of:

  • Certain cancers

  • Changes associated with blood sugar

  • Some infectious diseases

  • Seizure-associated odours

  • Human remains

  • Other biological changes

However, a pet dog's sniffing behaviour should never be treated as a medical diagnosis.

A dog may detect an unusual odour without understanding what it means.

18. Can a Dog Lose Its Sense of Smell?

Yes.

Loss or reduction of smell is called anosmiaĀ or hyposmia, depending on severity.

Possible causes include:

  • Nasal inflammation

  • Infection

  • Foreign bodies

Runny + thick + yellow/green + bloody + accompanied by sneezing or breathing problems

should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
