First, quick science bit: There’s only 1 species of domestic dog Canis lupus familiaris_.

All dogs, from a Chihuahua to a Great Dane, are the same species. They can all technically breed with each other.

So when people ask "how many species of dogs" they usually mean breeds.

How many dog breeds are there?

It depends on who’s counting:

- FCI (World Canine Org): Recognizes 360+ breeds worldwide

- AKC (American Kennel Club): Recognizes 200+ breeds

- UKC + other kennels: Push the total to 400-450 breeds including rare/local breeds

Plus there are 100s of village dogs / landraces that aren’t officially registered but have existed for 1000s of years.

So: 1 species, 360-450+ recognized breeds, thousands of mixes.

What jobs do dogs do?

Humans have been partnering with dogs for 15,000+ years. We basically bred them for jobs. Here are the main "job groups":

Bred for strength, guarding, and endurance.

- Examples: Bloodhound - best nose in the world. Beagle, Greyhound, Dachshund, Rhodesian Ridgeback

- Modern job: Bloodhounds still used by police to track missing people

5. Terrier Dogs - The Pest Control

Bred to hunt vermin in barns and underground.

- Jobs: Rat/mouse control, digging, guarding

- Examples: Jack Russell, Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, Schnauzer

- Modern job: Still great farm dogs. Also feisty companions

6. Toy/Companion Dogs - The People Dogs

Bred specifically to be human companions.

- Modern job: Therapy dogs in hospitals, emotional support animals

7. Non-Sporting Group - The "Misc" Experts

Too unique to fit other groups.

- Examples: Dalmatian - used to run alongside fire trucks. Bulldog, Poodle, Chow

- Modern job: Poodles are hypoallergenic service dogs. Dalmatians are still firehouse mascots

Dogs are the most diverse mammal on earth because we shaped them for every job imaginable.

From a 2kg Chihuahua warming laps to a 90kg Mastiff guarding livestock in Gauteng, they all come from wolves but became specialists.
